Sussex Student Card reinstatement success

September 29, 2011 7:33 PM

East Sussex County Council's u-turn on the Student Rail Card has been warmly welcomed by local MP, Norman Baker.

The local MP was contacted by a number of constituents from Seaford who raised concerns about the county council's decision to no longer subsidise the card which gives a 34% discount on rail season tickets for students who are in full time education at college or sixth form and the impact that this would have on local students.

Taking forward his constituents' concerns, Norman wrote to Rupert Clubb at East Sussex County Council. Mr Clubb recently responded to the local MP saying that the Sussex Student Card is "now again available".

Norman says: "The council has finally made the right decision on this. Economically, times are tough at the moment, but the council's decision to stop subsidising the card was the wrong choice even in such circumstances. It is quite right that the council has now decided to use some of the freedom that they have been given to reverse their decision. This is to the benefit of young hardworking students.
