Local Elections Cancelled [back to top]
Last week, it was announced that the local elections in East Sussex, scheduled for May, have been cancelled. I believe this decision is a deeply undemocratic move, denying local residents their voice at a crucial time for our county. The Labour government has delayed the elections for a year to facilitate local government reorganisation, but it is not clear when council elections will take place.
I spoke in the House of Commons to share local outrage with the Deputy Prime Minister. You can watch that here.
The Conservative-led East Sussex County Council, applied to Labour Government ministers, to block these elections, preventing voters from holding them accountable. Since 2021, the Liberal Democrats have made gains across East Sussex, and at the most recent General Election, we elected five Lib Dem MPs - proving residents are ready for change.
Alongside local Lib Dems, I remain committed to fighting for our local community and holding the failing Conservative administration to account. The May 2025 elections should have given you the chance to demand better; instead, the government and County Council have silenced you. However, they cannot escape the judgement of voters forever.
Prime Minister’s Questions: Improving Accessibility In Social Housing [back to top]
On Wednesday, 5th February, I raised the issue of essential adaptations in council housing with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. I have received numerous complaints from disabled residents, particularly those with disabled children, about homes that do not meet their accessibility needs.
While small adaptations (under £1,000) like grab rails or concrete steps are often free, larger modifications require navigating a complex funding system that leaves many in unsuitable housing. I called on the Prime Minister to ensure councils receive the funds needed to retrofit homes so every child gets the start in life they deserve.

Conservatives Vote Down Plan to Save Social Care Facilities Including Phoenix Centre [back to top]
East Sussex County Council's Conservative administration, backed by Labour ministers, rejected a Lib Dem amendment that would have restored over £1.5m in funding to vital social care facilities, including the Phoenix Centre in Lewes. The amendment, seconded by an independent councillor and funded by reserves from the deferred May 2025 elections, would have protected essential services for our most vulnerable residents.
This decision leaves many at risk. I remain committed to fighting for social care services and urge you to sign our petition to save the Phoenix Centre.
My Call to the Government to Address Failing Infrastructure [back to top]
I recently urged the government to address failing infrastructure before approving further large-scale housing developments. In areas such as Polegate and Newhaven, thousands of new homes have been approved, yet traffic has worsened, GP appointments are scarce, and schools are overwhelmed.
I raised concerns with Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook regarding developments with no clear plans for local transport or school capacity. We need real investment—not empty promises—and I am also pushing for better healthcare services, including a new facility for Polegate and Willingdon and more GP spaces in Seaford.
Currently, Lewes District Council is consulting on its new Local Plan. I encourage you to take part and ensure our infrastructure concerns are heard.

Newhaven Fort Reopens [back to top]
Great news for our area as Newhaven Fort reopens after a £7.5m restoration, with new attractions including exhibitions, an adventure playground, and a 1970s-themed escape room. This major investment preserves an important local site and promises an exciting and sustainable future. It will officially open again this weekend.
Youth Mobility Scheme with Europe [back to top]
The UK’s post-Brexit reality has severely limited opportunities for young people to live, work, and study in Europe. The Conservative government’s Brexit deal has created complex red tape – making it easier for young Brits to work in Japan than in France.
I proposed a scheme allowing 18–30-year-olds from the UK and EU to live and work in each other’s countries for up to two years, similar to arrangements with Australia and Canada. Despite strong public support, the government dismisses the idea, wrongly equating it with reopening freedom of movement.
This scheme could also help alleviate labour shortages in sectors such as hospitality, tourism, and the arts. While the Labour government claims to prioritise economic recovery, it continues to ignore Brexit’s damaging impact. I am also advocating for rejoining a Customs Union. For more details, please read my piece in Sussex Bylines: Youth Mobility Scheme
Petition Submitted Against Booking System for Tips [back to top]
Thank you to the over 3500 residents who signed our petition against East Sussex County Council’s proposed booking system for household waste recycling sites. Similar systems have proved unpopular elsewhere and risk increasing fly-tipping.
I urge the Council to abandon this proposal and retain the current walk-in system.

Fighting to Clean Up Our Waterways [back to top]
I joined forces with 38 Degrees to support the Stop the Sewage campaign, reaffirming my commitment to protecting our rivers, chalk streams, and coastlines. Water company bosses must be held accountable for the pollution harming our natural environment. I’ll keep pressing the government to do more to tackle sewage dumps, and as many residents know I am scheduled to be meeting with the Chief Exec of Southern Water.
Backing the Climate and Nature Bill [back to top]
I proudly supported the Climate and Nature Bill, introduced by my Lib Dem colleague Roz Savage MP, which is essential for tackling climate change and biodiversity loss. The bill ultimately was deferred by the Government, who say they will engage with Lib Dems on implementing aspects of the bill. It was of vital importance to raise such an important issue and show support in the house.
Cracking Down on Dirty Money [back to top]
I spoke on behalf of the Liberal Democrats on tax transparency, criticising the UK’s role as a haven for dirty money. It is disgraceful that while pensioners lose winter fuel payments, billions are siphoned off through opaque tax arrangements.
Debate on UN Education Resolution [back to top]
I addressed the right to education in Parliament, emphasising that millions of children worldwide still lack access to schooling. Education is the foundation of opportunity, equality, and progress.

Local Visits [back to top]
I recently visited the Seaford Heartsease Group, which supports locally bereaved people and Annecy Primary School in Seaford, where children asked insightful questions—from my favourite colour to the sewage crisis.

I visited local charity Seeability who help people who campaign for and support people with learning disabilities, autism and sight loss. They are looking for volunteers. Find out more by clicking here.
I had a fantastic visit to Seahaven Baby Bank. Helen, the founder, runs this amazing initiative from her home, helping hundreds of women and families in our community.
I also stopped by Paradise Park with Cllr Sarah Osborne. A 5th generation family business based in Newhaven and big local employer who will be hit hard by the National Insurance Contribution rise for employers. They also raised struggles in recruitment for horticulture.
As many local people will know, it's a great business, so please go and show your support. I didn't get to visit the dinosaurs this time, but I'll be back with the kids soon!
