Victory for Young People: Labour Finally Bows to Pressure on Youth Mobility Scheme

James MacCleary MP, Lib Dem Spokesperson for Europe and MP for Lewes, has welcomed the Labour Government’s reported long-overdue acceptance that a Youth Mobility Scheme with the EU should be considered - following months of pressure and campaigning from James and the Liberal Democrats.
For months, the Labour Government inexplicably refused to extend a scheme already in place with Australia and Japan to our European allies. Now, in a significant step forward, it has been reported that progress is finally being made on a deal that would allow young people from across Sussex and the UK to live, work, and travel more freely in Europe.
James said: “Progress on a Youth Mobility Scheme isn't just a victory for young people across the UK - it's a victory for common sense too. For months, the Labour Government inexplicably refused to countenance extending a scheme we already have with Australia and Japan to our European allies.
“We're looking forward to scrutinising the details of this proposal and will continue to hold the Government to account to make sure we get the best possible deal for young people here in the UK.
“This has to be the first step in fixing our broken relationship with the EU and cutting down the Brexit red tape which is holding our economy back.”
The Liberal Democrats will continue to push for greater opportunities for young people and ensure that the Government follows through on its commitments rather than simply offering warm words.”
